Use of force as a decision framework

The force continuum is a framework for judgment, not a ladder that requires movement through every level. Use presence, communication, and time when safe; respond only within law, policy, training, and the facts known at the moment. The objective is safety and lawful control, never punishment or harm. FIELD PRACTICE For force-framework work, identify the facts, lawful authority, safer alternatives, proportionality, stop point, medical needs, notifications, and required report fields without practicing injury techniques. Use a concrete field example from the course domain without including unnecessary personal data. FIELD CHECK • Separate verified facts from reports, assumptions, and recommendations. • Preserve safety, privacy, evidence, and a clear handoff. • Escalate unresolved risk through the designated channel and record who was notified.
