Why access control matters

Access control protects people, assets, and information through layers of defense. Authorized access matches a legitimate role and purpose; unauthorized access includes bypassing a barrier or using someone else’s credential. Insider risk is managed through consistent controls and reporting. FIELD PRACTICE For access-control work, verify authorization, badge state, door or system status, least privilege, and the escalation path before granting or changing access. Use a concrete field example from the course domain without including unnecessary personal data. FIELD CHECK • Separate verified facts from reports, assumptions, and recommendations. • Preserve safety, privacy, evidence, and a clear handoff. • Escalate unresolved risk through the designated channel and record who was notified.

Tip: Treat every access decision as a safety and accountability control.
